While Hollywood cheating scandals and breakups seem to happen every day, these A-List couples have found the magic formula for standing the test of time.
1. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick
Bacon and Sedgwick first met on the set of a PBS play called “Lemon Sky” in the 1980s and fell in love, marrying in 1988. Both successful actors in their own right, they have worked together, too, in films like “Murder in the First” and “Pyrates.” They have two lovely children together, daughter Sosie and son Travis. Bacon has famously admitted that when he doesn’t see Kyra for awhile when one or the other is traveling for an acting job, he looks forward to reuniting with her. The couple has great communication and a shared sense of humor. When asked for the secret of their success, Bacon says simply, “We like to be together.”
2. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
Hanks and Wilson married in 1988, not long after meeting on Hank’s hit television show “Bosom Buddies.” On the red carpet, they always seem very happy and in sync. When asked about his successful Hollywood marriage, Hanks has credited mutual respect and laughter as keys to success, as well as being involved in each other’s lives from day to day. The couple has two sons, Truman and Chet. By all accounts, they are as in love as ever as they head toward their fourth decade together.
3. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
While they don’t have the longevity of some of the couples on this list, Garner and Affleck have been together since 2005 and seem to be going strong. The couple has three children: Violet, Seraphina and Samuel. While Affleck admits that they don’t have a perfect marriage, he says Garner makes him a better person and has helped him to become more mature.
4. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell
While not technically married, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn can boast one of the longest partnerships in Hollywood to date. They met in 1968 on the set of “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band“; however, the couple reports that they were just friends until working together in the 1983 hit “Swing Shift,” where they began a romantic connection. Their close-knit families set the stage for relationship success. Hawn credits compatibility, communication, and a joint intention for it to work without either partner losing themselves. It’s natural and healthy to disagree at times, as long as that commitment is there.
5. Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates
These two excellent actors met when they both auditioned for the movie “The Big Chill” back in the latter part of the 1980s. While Cates did not get the role she tried out for in the movie, many say she got something better: a lasting relationship was an amazing guy. Both actors have been in a string of hits, parlaying their talent for acting into a lasting cornerstone of compatibility. They couple has been married since 1989 and are still going strong.
Long-term relationships take work, but if these couples can succeed even under the glare of the Hollywood spotlight, there’s hope for everyone.
