This year marks 60 years since the Guinness World Records team opened their doors for the weird, wonderful and the freakishly gifted. While we’re all pretty familiar with the run-of-the-mill ‘tallest man in the world’ and ‘oldest gymnast’, here are a few of the more outlandish ones that demonstrate there’s a World Record waiting in the wings for all of us.
Most drink cans broken with a whip in three minutes
Proving his mettle as a modern-day Indiana Jones with an unusual arch-nemesis is Adam Winrich, who broke 23 drink cans within three minutes. He also holds 15 other cracking world records, including classics such as ‘most flowers crack-whipped from the mouth in one minute’ (44) and ‘most candles extinguished with a whip in one minute’ (102).
Longest hospital trolley duration
At what point during Tony Collins’ 77 hour and 30-minute stay in a hospital trolley in a corridor at Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon did he think, “You know what? I’m going to roll with this. Get the Guinness World Record guys on the phone, pronto.”
Most apples held in own mouth and cut by chainsaw in one minute
Strange by name, Strange by nature: this professional juggler, escapologist and sword swallower managed to cut eight apples held in his mouth in one minute.
Most canned drinks opened by a parrot in one minute
Props must go to Zac the Macaw from San Jose who’s single-handedly made himself the most sought-after pet for bone-idle folk the world over.
Largest gathering of people wearing akubra hats
Exactly 1,912 people congregated in their bush-hat finest at an Australian (where else?) event in 2012. Whatever next? Largest gathering of people wearing bum bags? Nipple clamps? Where will it all end?!
