A Woman Tried to Sue Her 8-Year-Old Nephew Over A Hug

We’ve heard some bizarre things in the news, but this most definitely ranks near the top of the crazy chart. It’s been reported that a woman in New York recently tried to sue her 8-year-old nephew for $175,000 (£114,819) – after an over-exuberant hug caused her to break her wrist. We wish we were kidding.

Let’s look at things from her point of view. I mean, they are lethal things, hugs. Besides the immediate risk of being too close to someone too suddenly for your brain to handle, you’ve got the danger of germ exposure and contamination. Then there’s the threat of an over-squeeze, and not to mention the distinct possibility of an awkward back pat. I can hardly bear to think about what she’s going through.

The incident occurred at the boy’s own birthday party. The buffet was ready. The presents were laid out. Everything was running just like a normal 8-year-old’s birthday celebration, but a terrible thing was about to happen. When the boy, Sean, saw his aunt, Jennifer, he ran towards her with such excitement, exuberance and glee that Jennifer just couldn’t handle it. His energy knocked her off-balance and she fell to the ground, breaking her wrist as she landed.

Many would call this an unfortunate accident. ‘One of those things’. But not Jennifer. She was livid, and little Sean was to blame. This week, she’s calling for a six-member Superior Court jury to find the boy liable for her injury. She wishes to claim $127,000 from Sean for his negligent and reckless actions.

Despite her describing how he’d always been ‘loving and sensitive,’ Jennifer Connell still believes that she deserves this compensation. A very shocked and confused Sean, who is now 12 years old, appeared in court last week to face his charges.

The scene of the crime was revisited in this horrifying description of the activities leading up to the incident. Sean had just received his first ever unassisted bicycle and was enjoying the freedom of being on two wheels for the first time in his life. But when he spotted his Aunt, he dropped his new beloved bike on the ground, and moved towards her exclaiming, “Auntie Jen, Auntie Jen.”

She went on to say:

“All of a sudden he was there in the air, I had to catch him and we tumbled onto the ground. I remember him shouting, ‘Auntie Jen I love you,’ and there he was flying at me.”

However, she did not say anything about her wrist at the time, claiming that she didn’t want to upset Sean on his birthday. The injury has also caused much difficulty in her social life:

“I was at a party recently, and it was difficult to hold my hors d’oeuvre plate.”

Shocking stuff. Really. No surprise that it took just twenty minutes for the jury to rule in favour of Sean the defendant, awarding Auntie Jen nothing in her civil claim against her nephew. Justice has been served. Thank god not everybody is completely mad, eh?
