It’s only taken them nearly 70 years, but Swedish-based clothing giant H&M is to be commended for their latest move. Why, you ask? Well, their latest advert features the brand’s first hijab-wearing Muslim model. And she’s every bit as awesome as she looks.

Mariah Idrissi from London stars in the latest advert for the brand’s ‘Close the Loop’ campaign, which encourages customers to recycle their old garments. Leaning against a doorway, Idrissi oozes glamour, draped in a pastel-coloured coat and gold accessories, with a checkered hijab and rounded sunglasses topping off the look. She basically looks like she’s just stepped out of a classic movie. Can we be her? Please?

So, tell us all about H&M’s first hijab-wearing Muslim model…

The Muslim model, whose parents are Pakistani and Moroccan, was picked by the company after she was scouted by a casting-director friend. She told Buzzfeed Life that being cast in such a huge campaign means a lot: “H&M is such a huge retailer, and to finally have someone Muslim in hijab representing the brand is amazing to show.”

The 23-year-old, who decided to wear a hijab when she was 17, stars in the short film alongside other figures including a plus-size model, a drag queen and a boxer with a prosthetic leg. It’s a pretty inspirational film all by itself, challenging so-called ‘fashion rules’. It tells us to embrace our weird side. Wear sandals and socks. Heck, even go crazy and wear a hat indoors.

Idrissi says that the shoot was a dream to work on, with the H&M team remaining respectful to her beliefs as a Muslim model. She said: “One of the watches was dangling in the wrong way, and rather than just twisting it on my wrist, the cameraman asked a woman to come over. It just showed that little bit of respect.”

Believe it or not, modelling is a side-project for Idrissi. Her full-time job is running her own Moroccan-inspired beauty salon in London. Staff specialise in treatments like henna application, Moroccan massages and even Halal nail polish. Check out her Instagram for salon shots and pics of her glam style. Oh, and she’s also a motivational speaker. Could she actually be any more awesome?
