10) ISIS? ISIL? IS?
Initially, the media would refer to them as ISIS, an acronym that means the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham.
Many people then decided to call them ISIL, changing the ‘al-Sham’ of the previous name for the English ‘Levant’.
Supporters of the terrorist organisation actually want everyone to call them simply IS, or Islamic State, as further emphasis on them being a self-ruling Caliphate. But critics reckon this legitimises them.
Alternatively, some others, including the French media, call them DAIISH, which the acronym from the Arabic form of ISIL, which is al Dawla al-Islamiya fi Iraq wa Al-Sham.
