There’s an important question we’ve been neglecting since 2002. And that’s, just what exactly does the chorus of The Ketchup Song actually mean? You know the one. That song with the three Spanish girls dancing on the beach in bikinis, before they unleash their inner Coyote Ugly on top of the bar? The song with all those hand movements that we still somehow know 14 years on? That song with the completely incomprehensible lyrics?

Yeah, you know the one. If you’d somehow just managed to forget this song actually existed, we apologise for bringing it up. But it’s for a good cause. Because we’ve just uncovered possibly the best piece of ’00s pop trivia since…well, the 00s.

What the hell does the chorus of The Ketchup Song actually mean?

C’mon, you must have thought this too? When the chorus of The Ketchup Song starts up, we all have our own way to sing it. It’s pretty much a free-for-all when it kicks in.

For the record, these are the official lyrics:

aserejè ja de jè de jebe tu de jebere seibiunouva,
majavi an de bugui an de buididipi,
aserejè ja de jè de jebe tu de jebere seibiunouva,
majavi an de bugui an de buididipi

It looks jibberish, right? That’s because it actually is. Las Ketchup actually admitted that they didn’t know any English, so when it came to The Ketchup Song they improvised. They ended up just singing along to the chorus of Rapper’s Delight by The Sugarhill Gang phonetically. This is the chorus in question:

“I said a hip hop the hippie the hippie
to the hip hip hop, a you dont stop
the rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie
to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat”

Now, just listen to The Ketchup Song chorus again, this time singing along with the above words. As if you didn’t understand English and had no idea how words were pronounced.

Mind. Blown.
